CARTAS MARRUECAS JOSE CADALSO PDF

Scott Dale , University of Pennsylvania. Despite some admirable critical efforts, Jose de Cadalso's Cartas marruecas has yet to receive sufficient critical acclaim for its novelistic innovations and its importance to the trajectory of the modern Peninsular novel. Cadalso's novelistic craft, in fact, was decades ahead of its time and played a large role in the development of the European epistolary novel as well as in the birth of Spanish Realism. Thus my dissertation aims to identify and analyze the modern narrative techniques in which Cadalso attempts to create a broad and impartial vision of the Spanish Enlightenment.

Through detailed analyses of the ninety missives that compose the Cartas I illustrate that Cadalso--a very innovative writer for his time--grapples with the problems of presenting an objective perspective of eighteenth-century Spanish culture.

My critical approach is concerned primarily with the style, content and intention of the essay collection, as well as with the feelings and desires of the three characters who write the letters to each other: Nuno Nunez, Gazel Ben-Aly and Ben-Beley. I carefully examine the picturesque descriptions, novelistic portraits and, above all, the customs and manners depicted throughout the novel.

My research draws from various seminal studies on Cadalso, with the intent to stimulate the impulse of my thesis, to show where research has yet to venture, as well as to illuminate certain problems concerning the narrative techniques in Cadalso's work. In conclusion, the Andalusian novelist utilizes narrative approaches and novelistic techniques not normally found until the development of the nineteenth-century Spanish novel.

I suggest that his intent is to propose that new approaches in fiction are necessary in order to construct a modern and more complete image of eighteenth-century Spain. In a word, Cartas marruecas was a very contemporary piece for its era and deserves more critical attention within the context of the historiography of the modern Peninsular novel. One suspects that his hatred of translation may be a coded way of expressing hatred for the content of these translations, the discourse of the philosophes that had led France to its hated Revolution a few years before and that would convert Spaniards to secularism if translation were not censored. Nor is it likely that very many Spaniards of his own time would have agreed with the fear that Castilian might disappear from the face of the earth—to be replaced, apparently, with a Franstilian forged out of the endless translations of Gallic literature that were flooding the Spanish book market.
