The course is designed to provide a basic knowledge of biochemical, biological and genetic principles necessary for graduate study in midwifery. At the end of the course the student must know the chemical composition of living organisms and their constituents, the structures and functions of cells and the related biochemical processes in biological and pathophysiological conditions. The student must know the main metabolic processes at the molecular level, their integration into the body, the genome organization and the main mechanisms underlying the expression and transmission of the genetic information. The student must also know the main biophysical and biochemical methods with particular attention to topics of diagnostic pre-natal and post-natal relevance. The course also aims: - to provide basic knowledge on the normal functioning of the body in order to support the understanding of the pathological changes and and provide principles for the development of decision-making tools.
