His father had recently died, and the composer was leaving much of his past behind him including his role as a violinist. In Paris he absorbed new musical styles and influences, and began a fruitful period of writing operas and ballets in this new cultural environment. His first three operas in particular bear the stamp, most notably The Three Wishes , which calls on banjos, saxophones, and flexatone in addition to a full orchestra for its film-within-an-opera set in New York City. The last major echoes of jazz came in the ballet King in Check , and the idiom only made subtle, occasional appearances in his work thereafter. Though Twirling Stick does seduce Pot into an adulterous kiss, Pot begins to long for her husband — who himself receives advances from the naturally coquettish Dishcloth.

A violent broom makes an appearance as well, though the day is saved when a Monty Python-esque giant foot boots the lid back to the pot. The story, strange as it may be, is not exactly unique to the time. The suite consists of four movements, opening with the Prologue. A trumpet call kicks of an off-kilter march, which is a very cleverly constructed piece of chamber music. Uneven rhythms and bits of the various tunes are passed around and tossed through the ensemble with abandon. The Charleston movement begins rather deceptively, as cascades of notes in the winds overlay an ominous ostinato in the lower instruments.
This, of course, gives way to a sunny Charleston, replete with all the musical trappings one would expect. The Finale recalls the opening of the work and provides the soundtrack for the happy reunion of the Pot and the Lid, cleverly offering bits dare we say tasty morsels? Enjoy our concerts? La Revue de Cuisine (The Kitchen Review)
Bohuslav Martinu 's first few years in Paris were a real eye-opener for him. The Paris of the s was, of course, one of the most remarkable and diverse artistic centers of all time, and Martinu encountered a wider range of music and art than he ever had before. Seemingly everything he saw and heard, from Impressionist music to jazz to avant-garde theater, made its way into his own prolific output of the time. In the year alone he created three new ballets -- Le Raid merveilleux, On Tourne!
