I've always wanted to read this book, I went to the bookstore's shelf many times, saw it, grab it, but never bought it until four days ago. The book gave me a great context about how the life of women during the time of the American colony was. I recommend reading the book because it is good, and Lavin is such a great writer, but to know more in depth about the live of this women, I will have to research more.
It's interesting and entertaining. I would have loved to "listen" to Sor Juana's voice a little bit more though, she seems so aloof and distant throughout the book that sometimes comes out like a shadow or a memory. However, for those who are new to her work and character this book could be a good departure. It also portrays a rich period in Mexican history during the viceroyalty. A time when it was possible to see the many different castes that made up Mexico's actual population and its peculiar character.

The topic Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and historical details of the book are interesting, but I wanted to like it more than I did. The book is told in first person narratives from a variety of women surrounding Sor Juana as well as occasional letters written by her.
I found it hard to keep track of who the various women were, though I see that Lavin's intent was to show a variety of social classes and backgrounds in order to capture the era.
